April 2009: Applications for Vestas Scholarship Due May 1st.Thanks to the  generosity of Vestas, the Oregon MBA and the Center for Sustainable Business Practices are awarding a new scholarship for full time 2nd year or accelerated MBA students for the 2009-2010 academic year.  This scholarship will be awarded based on academic achievement in the Oregon MBA program, educational focus on sustainability, engagement with the Center, and the quality of written supporting materials.  A scholarship committee comprised of CSBP and Graduate Office staff will make the final decision.  Contact Tom Osdoba for more information.  All materials are to be submitted in electronic and hard copy to Perri McGee in the Graduate Office no later than May1st.

April 2009: The Center for Sustainable Business Practices names managing director
TomOsdoba has been named managing director of the Center for Sustainable Business Practices at the Lundquist College of Business at the University of Oregon. He assumed his new role on April 1.

Marc_Stuart_s.jpg May 2009:  "Financial Innovations in Developing a Carbon Economy" - Marc Stuart, EcoSecurities
MarcStuart, co-founder of EcoSecurities was on campus on May 11th and 12th as the 3rd Executive in Residence of the Center.  Stuart co-founded the firm in 1997 and has more than 15 years of experience in the international development of carbon markets.  Today EcoSecurities has one of the world's largest and most diversified portfolios of emissions reduction projects in the world. The company works to develop projects to offset emissions and buys emission reduction credits. Stuart was a speaker for the Securities Analysis speaker series.

JasonGraham-Nye, co-founder of gDiapers, returned to the UO to discuss how a new company develops not only a market for its products, but a passion around its brand. gDiapers is an eco-friendly diaper --- an important innovation considering that a single disposable diaper can take up to 500 years to biodegrade in the landfill! Why else was this product a revolution? Conventional disposable diapers are the third largest contributors to landfills in the world, and yet only five percent of the population uses them.

On Friday April 3, 2009, students from the University of Oregon School of Law and the Lundquist College of Business hosted this year's Sustainable Business Symposium: Growing a Green Economy: Perspectives from Law and Business." This one-day event is designed to capture the dynamic energy around sustainability in the Pacific Northwest. The event was held at the newly-renovated White Stag Building in downtown Portland and featured a keynote speaker, lunch, and four forward-looking panel discussions on topics such as climate and energy policy in the next presidential administration, green building, meeting Oregon's renewable portfolio standard, and how businesses can convert risk opportunity to meet the needs of our growing green economy.

The Center for Sustainable Business Practices welcomed Tim Fallon, president of Kettle Foods North America, as our second Executive in Residence. Fallon joined Kettle Foods in 2005 and oversees all of the US operations. He spoke on Kettle Foods' sustainability efforts to an audience from the College, the UO,  and the broader Eugene community.  The following day Fallon met students to discuss ongoing efforts to improve the sustainability of business operations as well as guest lectured in classes on entrepreneurial accounting and new product development.

andy_hoffman.jpg February 2009: "Moving Beyond the Green Divide"  - Andrew Hoffman from University of Michigan
What is happening in the environmental movement today? What are the emergingroles and how do these interact with business? A packed audience from across the UO heard the perspectives of Andy Hoffman on this topic on February 18, 2009.  Hoffman is the Holcim Professor of Sustainable Enterprise at the University of Michigan and Associate Director of the Frederick A. and Barbara M. Erb Institute for Global Sustainable Enterprise. Hoffman, author of the best selling book "Climate Change:What's Your Business Strategy (Memo to the CEO)", also signed copies of his book after the talk.
